Are you willing to be interviewed for a research project?
My name is Kate Clifford.
I am completing a Masters degree in Philanthropic Studies at the University of Kent in the UK.
As part of my research, I am interviewing expats who have moved to Javea in the last few years, from another country.
THE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
There are no right or wrong answers!!
Q1. Tell me about your life before you moved here? What circumstances or choices led to your move? How do you feel about living here and in this community?
Q2. How would you describe your thoughts, feelings, decisions or activities to do with ‘giving’ or helping others?
For example: Based on what you think is important in life, your background or experiences, priorities, how you feel about family or community, your religion or beliefs.
Q3. Do you think your thoughts, feeling, decisions, or activities to do with giving have changed alongside your move to Javea?
For example: Before you moved to Javea, were you involved with, or did you support any particular initiatives to help others? Now that you live in Javea, are you involved with, or do you support any initiatives to help others?
What will the interview be like?
Everyone’s stories and views are unique. The interviews will be relaxed and informal, for you to talk freely.
The questions are to guide us, and I may ask more as we go along.
You can skip any question you don’t want to answer and stop the interview at any time you choose.
The interviews will be in English, but don’t worry if English is not your first language, it is not a language test!
Where and when will the interview be held?
We can meet online or in person, on weekdays and weekends, anytime from now until 24th May.
We will agree a time to suit you. I expect each interview to take around one hour, but it might only take 15-20mins, that’s ok.
If I agree to take part, what do I have to do?
It is important that you understand what will happen if you agree to take part, so please read this information page carefully, and then contact me.
You can contact me via email kjc37@kent.ac.uk or on whatsapp +44 7870594627 and we will arrange a time and place for the interview.
WHY I AM ASKING - THE RESEARCH PROJECT
- What is the research about?
Choosing to move from one country to another, as an expat, is a major lifestyle change.
I am studying whether people’s thoughts, feelings and decisions about ‘giving’ also change.
- What are Philanthropic Studies?
The media usually talk about Philanthropy in stories of rich, famous people giving to charity but actually it includes all kinds of ‘giving’ – including volunteering your time, sharing skills or expertise, and donating goods as well as money.
Philanthropic studies means studying how and why people give or help others without expecting anything in return.
The word Philanthropy is originally Greek and means “love of humanity”. Philanthropy exists in some form all over the world, in all cultures.
